VHCC cases are categorised by the legal aid agency as particularly complex, serious and expensive cases with trial estimates of over 40 days. They have a separate fee scheme managed under a special VHCC contract with the legal aid agency. 

Common cases to be categorised as VHCC include serious and complex fraud, terrorism, multi-handed homicide and human trafficking.
